Our Story

A story that began 125 years ago, in the far east of Luxembourg, next to the Sûre river. A farmers’ family with little land, a few cattle, and famous for their good food. Everything started in 1897 with Pierre Wengler who turned his passion into his profession. He began to produce wines and spirits, and ran a small bistro-restaurant at the same time.

In 1919, Jean-Pierre Wengler stopped farming and constructed the main house to further develop the wines and spirits production, adding organic juices.

After World War 2, Albert Wengler and his brother, Paul, were struggling with the business proposition. People wanted to have wines from the Mosel valley, the Sûre region had no reputation for wine production. In addition, global brands with artificial aromas and concentrates were arising to the detriment of our spirits and organic juice production.

The Revolution

In the 1960’s, Albert Wengler and his brothers decided to stop producing and re-orientated the company to an exclusive import and distribution company. A revolution for the business, and at the same time the birth of our family vision. From the beginning, we took quality very seriously. As an importer, our passion has been expressed in a very selective approach of developing our portfolio. The vision to differentiate by quality, is still today the guiding string in everything we do.

The drive to share elevating tasting experiences in Luxembourg and that fact of not being afraid daring to be the first to approach the most famous wine houses in the world, was somehow new undetected territory and quite visionary at that time. Starting with a top-down approach targeting the most renowned domains first to build up a strong credibility and reputation. Those winemakers and brands with whom we started partnering up with from the 1970’s to the 2000’s are today the foundations of our extraordinary portfolio.

In the beginning, the 1970’s were marked by the implementations of the re-orientation towards an import and distribution business. We started with the distribution of nobles estates like Joseph Drouhin and Trapet, as well as collaborations with Borie-Manoux for Bordeaux wines.

The Growth

The real acceleration has occurred, after Gérard Wengler took on the reigns of the company in 1992. He started travelling heavily around the European wine regions to further diversify and grow the portfolio. Kicking off with no other than the mythical Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Then, he took the first trip to Vinitaly, where he met Angelo Gaja. And after getting the distribution for Gaja, others followed. And as it happens, during this trip, he also got to know Marc de Gracia, the consultant of the famous Barolo Boys in Piemonte, who selected the partners for many Italian estates worldwide. Afterwards, came some of the finest Tuscan wineries, such as Ornellaia, Montegrossi and Sassetti Pertimali.
A complete Italian portfolio arose.

Building Up The Reputation

We made our way back to burgundy with one goal, as always, only the most renowned for their quality. For this trip, Gérard was accompanied by Olivier De Perthuis, who is still today part of the sommelier team. Olivier knew the region like the back of his hand. So they started collecting the finest estates in Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, as well as Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnaise and later Chablis and Beaujolais. At that time it was easier as most estates were still available. We just had to approach the most renowned winemakers, following the great reputations. And step by step our credibility and reputation was rising too. All of a sudden, we were sent from one winemaker to the other. Our burgundy portfolio is today, the region of which we are the most proud of. Afterwards, Austria, a region Gérard Wengler discovered during his annual Winter Sport holidays in Lech. In the restaurants, he got to know sommeliers suggesting the star winemakers of the country, again only the ones well known for quality. He added Austria to the portfolio, and it was an immediate success. Luxembourgers were now able to find their beloved Austrian wines (they usually drank during ski holidays) at home.

Diversification

In 2008 came the development of the German wine regions. During the Karthäuser Hof annual tasting, Christoph Tyrell presented Gérard Wengler to a few great German winemakers who were also present at the tasting. It was Sunday morning 9.30am, and at 11am, we had the representations for Meyer-Näkel, Knipser, Dönnhoff, Fürst, Künstler and Dr. Heger. Sometimes it is enough to be in the right place at the right time.

The New World wine portfolio then came by itself. Our portfolio was strong enough to attract some of the best estates from the other side of the world. Other big milestones around the turn of the century were characterized by the start of the partnership with the Diageo group in 1999 and the exclusive collaboration for the Moët Hennessy group in 2002 (Veuve Clicquot already in 1993).
